Do we need to run out of oil first?

If our economy is based on oil and the first world spend billions of dollars every day in the consumption of oil

then there is no way of making it less addictive? or can we move away from oil ourselves before this?

 Not really - It is a matter of supply and demand. We just have to run out of fossil fuel competitiveness.

 Disagree: No - It still doesn't help because of China, CAFE standards and OPEC. ( rsherfan ) but we are making our cars more fuel efficient so it balances out the whole supply vs demand debate
