Nuclear energy. Is it worth the risk?

Nuclear energy has the potential to provide clean energy without CO2 greenhouse contributing emissions... but are they safe on the scale that many people are advocating?

Nuclear power stations in India, Pakistan... China? What about the shipments of spent nuclear waste from those sites? Where do we store all the waste? Do we reprocess it? If we do reprocess, we move towards the incredibly potentially destructive attributes of Plutonium-239 which takes half a million years to become harmless (20 half lives).



How about the reactors themselves. Are they going to be safe from earthquakes, floods? Natural disasters could cause leakage --- or how about human threats? Terrorists have looked upon targeting nuclear reactors as targets long before 9/11.

What would the fallout potential be if a reactor were (through human error or mechanical failure) to meltdown? Some reactors carry orders of magnitude more nuclear material than Chernobyl, which only released some 3 percent of it's nuclear inventory, yet caused 34 deaths, thousands of cases of later-related illnesses and tainted the european countrysides with radioactive fallout cloud.

Is Nuclear energy really a necessary step towards solar/wind and other renewables? Or would we be better of just hanging on to what we've got at the moment and wait for solar, wind and other renewables to ramp up in efficiency/economies of scale?
