The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Not as good as I hoped.

There is so much buzz around this movie. The acting is brilliant and convincing. There is chemistry. There is love, consequence, thought and above all a depth of meaning and movement throughout the whole movie... but nothing generally stands out as being absolutely spectacular. Brilliant, yes. Absolutely spectacular, no.

This is kind of like the Forrest Gump of the new decade. Go through life - but there's a catch! It's in reverse. It got me until near the end. I won't spoil it for you, but there are some things that can upset my suspension of disbelief... and after the "piano" scene I was immediately (and involuntarily) snapped out of my movie trance. I woke up in the middle of a movie theatre, realising I was indeed watching this movie and I had rejected the scene that played out before me.

I was hoping for a bit more reverence, I guess. A bit more magic. If the story is indeed filled with sorrow all the way through I wanted it to be worth going through the emotional ride (thank goodness for the comedic moments) with some benefit at the end, as opposed to the realisation of mortality (we get reminded of that more than enough). The end left me feeling very empty and unconcluded. Benjamin Button's case was indeed curious - but that was basically it. His life was very much normal in the other respects - which was very anti-climactic at the end of everything. I had hoped he would have changed the world or done magnificent deeds. *shrugs*

But, that is just my yearning to go beyond what obviously wasn't the intention of the film. I wish it could have been a lot more. Thus my hopes were let down, through perhaps no fault of the movie's. The opportunity was there to make the film so much more special, in my opinion - and that was missed.

I personally love movies and entertainment, but this movie was terrible. I really hated it.
