Prediction: Windows 7 Phone will decimate all. Right?

It's a good thing that iPhone has blazed the way for us to get out of the rut. If theres one thing Microsoft isn't, it's a company that takes big bold risks. Apple is a company that does and it has definitely paid off...

but as of late it looks like the roles have been reversed. With the demise of the Maxipad, Apple have really let down a heck of a lot of people. They seem to be standing still in an industry that is moving continuously and relentlessly towards bigger, better, faster.

Let's be straight here. Windows 6.x is an utter relic of an OS... and with the announcement and previews of Windows 7 Phone, the actual OS and hardware spec the other day, it's nothing short of a complete about-face.

I hate being pulled in to mass brainwashing. It is the reason why I refused to own an iPhone, even after holding one and feeling geeky lust after doing hand flicks and pinch-to-zoom.... and I must admit that when I first saw the Windows 7 Phone launch event, I was more than just a long-time industry-weathered pundit looking at the token "next big thing" again and again and again...

but even the phone hardware that they were showcasing had sex appeal and awesomeness... despite my mental attempts to block such garbage. the interface with lessons learnt from the zune hd (which i haven't used by the way, only seen a few clips on youtube) looks the bit.

but all that i was able to quash with my intellectual might and resistance to gimmicky "new" stuff. i did it with the iphone and i was adamant that i would do it with windows 7 phone... as i've done with nokia maemo. as i did with android. a weathered mature tech geek doesn't get moved by such petty little things.

but then, they started digging deeper. the way the phone "integrates" with bing (a search engine that pales in comparison with the all mighty googlet) and when microsoft started showcasing how bing works a year ago, about being "contextual" i brushed it all off as a gimmicky angle the company was playing since they couldn't compete with the might of google.

now, with windows 7 phone os, you can see exactly WHY they built bing the way they did. type "avatar" and movie session times pop-up in cincemas close to your location (how does it know where you are? well, obviously with the GPS that microsoft made a MUST with every windows 7 phone device). decide to go there? bing maps shows you the way. click "near" ... parking, petrol stations, restaurants near there pop-up. click on the website... it pops up, and with TRUE pinch to zoom INSIDE the web browser (impressive, even geek standard impressive).

it recognises phone numbers ON webpages, so you can just call by double-tapping. it recognises addresses so you can double-tap and the maps app and GPS bring up navigation so you can get there.

that means a lot. may not have taken much actual "software" code to do, but it's not about that- it's about "integrating" and that is what a device this small must do.

Facebook - your contacts are not only your phone numbers, but anyone on facebook you like. their photos/profile gets imported, so when you call - their facebook profile photo gets shown to you. easy to code, why people haven't done it before? again... "integration".

your photo gallery - includes your facebook gallery. as soon as you get a windows 7 phone and register/login to your facebook, all your facebook galleries are available on your phone. all your contacts with their photos from facebook. events, whats new, notifications. social networking extension. social networking integration. pure class. blew me away.

let's be clear. there is NOTHING that this phone does that can't be done on other phones. the iPhone can certainly do all that. Probably as I type cupertino is in the midst of getting updates for the iphone to take advantage of these small innovative steps here and there... but the other thing it does - integrate with xbox, xbox live, integrate with windows media centre, your home pc properly... bing (at least with the way it helps people on-the-go) points to a very pervasive and massive strategy by microsoft to become the cement inbetween the bricks.

i was surprised. very surprised... but they i was sad. why? because microsoft already dominates in so many places. i feel that this may strangle an already suffocated industry where there are only a handful of real players and such a decisive blow- if it happens- will ultimately mean fewer competitors. apple is strong enough to go a few more rounds before we even begin to worry about them - but palm whose market cap is less than 1bn may throw in the towel. a few of the other smaller phone makers also.

we'll see what happens. but all the signs are there for bringing the pain. engadget registered over 680 comments in less than 24hrs. we haven't even seen numbers that big for anything apple-based... which simply points to this: the microsoft customer base is much larger - and a lot of it is simply based on the assumption that microsoft is for mainstream and apple is for those that want to 'think different'.

i haven't got any info on whether windows 7 phone does preemptive multitasking - i hope it still does. if anyone has info on that it'll be great.
