Can the new i7 beat the infamous CELL Processor?
(by rsherfan) on 8/01/2009, 1:31pm
33.33%  vs  66.67%

The CELL processor that is in the PS3 (and 4.0Ghz versions with more memory in IBM QS20 blade servers) are rated somewhere around the 200 - 250gigaflops mark at full pelt depending upon spec. The new intel i7 on the other hand tips in just over the 50gigaflops mark with all cores maxed out.

Having the problems associated with availablity, platform compatibility and conventional "wisdom" taken into account, can the new i7 be seen to outpower the CELL? in practical terms?

The i7 is leagues superior to the CELL which is just a PPC core with a few DSP devices connected to it.

No the PS3 is a supercomputer about 40x faster than a PC. It is shown at the folding at home project.

Agree: for certain tasks, yes. ( rsherfan ) No, the limiting factor for Crysis was RAM and texture memory rather than the CPU itself.

Disagree: that was in the Sony campaign. It says 40x faster than the PS2 NOT the PC. It would probably be as fast as an average PC today. ( Borneio ) No the PS3 is a supercomputer about 40x faster than a PC. It is shown at the folding at home project.
