Your thoughts on Thailand. Any good?

Heard from a few pple that Thailand is a slum and dirty. They also said there were too many 'professionals of the X-rated kind'(PROS) hanging around the city areas, esp Phuket.
Not recommended by friends...but yet others have said awesome things about it.
Planning a trip soon and was contemplating Thailand b4 bad comments erased the idea.

Your thoughts appreciated.
